Valence is one of the six core dimensions in SongScore's Sonic DNA fingerprint, measuring the musical positiveness conveyed by a track on a 0-to-1 scale. Tracks with high valence sound happy, cheerful, and euphoric. Tracks with low valence sound sad, depressed, or angry.
Valence is calculated from harmonic content (major chords and consonant harmonies produce higher valence), melodic interval patterns (ascending, diatonic patterns read as positive), timbral brightness (bright, upper-frequency-heavy mixes read as higher valence), and rhythmic regularity (consistent, predictable rhythmic patterns contribute to positive valence perception). It is independent of tempo — a fast track in a minor key can have high Energy but low Valence.
Valence is a critical input to playlist matching across all platforms. Editorial playlists are frequently organised around valence ranges — "happy" playlists cluster high-valence tracks, "sad" playlists cluster low-valence tracks. The Analysis Report uses valence alongside mood analysis to recommend specific playlist targets and to identify potential mismatches between the track's emotional identity and the artist's intended audience.
